Barely There: Violetfly Jewellery

 These trio of delicate bangles and rings by Violetfly designer Katie Poore are just the perfect style medicine for the impending summer months. The fineness of the jewellery allow us to pile on more without appearing too overburden, the hammered texture effect and geometric shapes fulfils our current obsession for simplistic linear modernity.

About the designer

Jewellery designer Katie Poore started Violetfly after years of working and studying in the Baltimore jewelry making community. She runs Violetfly from her farm in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains right outside of Charleston, West Virginia. She feels fortunate to find the thing she enjoys the most; designing and making beautiful, delicate wearable art.

First Cut: SharpCloud Jewellery

The advance technological method of laser cutting has immensely enhanced jewellery designer’s ability to further explore their creativity and follow through their original visions of detailed intricacy in designs. What initially started off as a jewellery gift to a friend, Laura Guepin developed her love for laser technology, graphic design and architecture into a geometric-inspired jewellery collection aptly titled ‘SharpCloud’. Her pieces showcase her interest in straight lines and angles with the ability to turn a normal outfit into an edgier and modern look. 




The sharp and defined lines of the aluminium geometric statement necklace against an itsy bitsy cute floral top seems counterproductive at first glance, however the weightlessness of the necklace combined with the thickness of the laser cutting (at least 1mm thick) reduces the bulk of the necklace’s initial appearance. Despite the necklace covering majority of the central chest area it is delicately fine and surprisingly minimalist, contributed by the careful cut outs and mirror finish, with the black stone drop in the centre adding a touch of femininity and contrast. The cut outs are movable to allow Laura to create interesting shapes and fluidity of the piece. 

The geometric wood necklace is possibly my favourite out of her entire collection and something I would gladly wear everyday. Using MDF as a wood of choice, I prefer the natural look of the material to maintain its nature-given appearance. If you stare closely at one cut outs it has an optical three dimensional effect that is rather mesmerising.

Deliberate Layers By Aes Ornamentum

These Aes Ornamentum necklaces were worn with favoured regularity during my sunny trip abroad last September, particularly on the beach and during evening dinners. I love the casually structural repetitiveness to create these layering effect without appearing too overburden or overcompensated. Light as air and strung together with waxed cotton cord; these hollow brass tube necklaces can be continually layered until, well, there's no space on your neck left. The geometric tubes scatters in random fashion that makes it so versatile and enjoyable to wear.

The geometric layers overlaps each other with deliberate carelessness and in a tangled-like manner. Layering shouldn't be neat and precised, it should be worn to create your own care-free individuality.

Jackie LeTarte first founded Aes Ornamentum after attempting to create necklaces for herself that isn't overly bling and attention-seeking as she wears very little jewellery. Once she started playing around with shapes and materials the possibilities are endless. Urban/Nature Love-In with Adriatic Jewelry

 A story is a core ingredient when it comes to creating a piece of jewellery. From ideas to sketches and design to product; the laborious yet satisfying stages are a story in itself.

Adriatic Jewellery founder Rebecca Fragola uses her past, present and future to create pieces that has sentimental importance and a continuous narrative. Her inspiration comes from a contrasting combination of architecture in New York City where she is currently based and the beautiful Adriatic Sea where she spent her summers on a small island. 

The tall, sky-scraping buildings in New York City is used for its form and structure to create elongated and clean lines stacked together, symbolically emphasising the intimate closeness of the buildings and its people in New York City. The tiered piped ring also has a small element of the Adriatic influence with its organic tone and clean texture. Or possibly, the ring is inspired by the elongated area of the Adriatic Sea nestled in a cove between Italy and Croatia. 

 There is an accidental/subconscious deliberation of taking my images by the beach and Rebecca's images in an urban area. The ring worn alone by the beach represents the vastness of the never ending sea, a view undisturbed and uncluttered to reveal its natural beauty entirely on its own. Whereas the images taken in an urban area with a collection of jewellery worn represent the closeness of everything in New York City, hence the rings, bracelet and necklace being worn altogether against dark clothing; a representation of shadows and silhouettes being over-casted by skyscrapers. 

My favourite item out of the whole collection is certainly the tiered piped geometric ring in brass due to its clean lines and simplicity of it all. It has a feel of a statement piece due to its size yet at the same time it is wearable everyday; it does not feel like a ring that cannot be worn for certain occasions and  situations. This is possibly the sole purpose of it all. Jewellery does not need a reason.

About the designer

 Rebecca Fragola uses recycled metals (brass, silver and copper) and unique gemstones for her handmade jewellery line. She has a BFA in metalsmithing and is always trying to learn new techniques to expand her line. Her Australian Shepherd Shelby is always in the studio to keep her company.

Linear Path with Elisha Marie Jewellery

The thought of wearing jewellery to the beach has never entered my mind until my recent trip abroad. Not by virtue of the old wisdom that maintains "never wear jewellery to the beach" or otherwise funky tan lines, but for someone who prefers the invisible-looking jewellery ideology, I have yet to find something that goes with my personal mantra of "less is more". To wear jewellery to the beach I want it to define my low-key sense of style.

 Despite my reservations, the trend of accessorising stylishly to the beach has never been so popular in a society where innovative and trend-setting style is the desired aim for inner fashionistas consciousness. You could layer and pile everything on to create a statement multi-layering effect, or something more simplistic, contemporary and subtle. 

This is where Elisha Marie Jewellery dreamily waltzes into my life. Using sustainable materials and recycled precious metals, she has perfected that multi-dimensional versatility within her stunning minimalist collection. Her specialism in linear shapes and organic textures compliments that casual beach look, and for me it most certainly a definition of 'less is more'. Moving on from the beach, there is no hesitation in wearing her designs on a day to day basis, on those special occasions and adding something a little extra in the working environment.  

I absolutely adore the stackable trio point gold rings of varying heights and the triangular braided rope cuff, two of my favourite pieces in her collection and both are wonderfully compatible. I wore them together and left everything else to rest. By concentrating on one specific area I felt I've created a perfect balance of minimalist and casual wear.

Elisha Marie jewellery fulfils my obsession with dainty and delicate geometric jewellery. Gold jewellery is perfect for the beach and compliments the tan perfectly. With gold not being my first colour of choice initially, it is fast seeping into my consciousness as an answer for my ever interchangeable style.

For her designs, she takes a page from nature and history, incorporating everything from arrows and sunrays to daggers and serpents. Few of Elisha’s designs start on a piece of paper. Rather, she follows her instincts, reaching for whichever materials inspire her on any given day
